Tesla is creating world’s largest decentralized power plant


The Australian government has just announced that, in cooperation with Tesla, it wants to equip 50,000 homes with photovoltaic installations and energy storage facilities and connect them to the global grid. It will be the biggest project of its kind in the world.

Electricity problems in Australia are widely known. The state has a problem with maintaining the efficient operation of the electricity grid. However, in order to improve its quality, the government is introducing more and more daring projects. A few months ago, the largest stationary energy storage facility (based on lithium-ion cells) with a total capacity of 129 MWh was opened, and now solar panels and home energy storage units have started beeing installed in the largest number of houses ever.

The plan is to connect 50,000 buildings equipped with solar panels to create the world’s largest decentralized solar-powered plant. It will result in 250 MW total power, which means 5 kW per building. Additionally, each of them will be equipped with a 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 2 energy storage.

The first 1100 homes will be supplied with solar panels at no cost. These will be social buildings, where the least wealthy people live. Installation costs are to be repaid by selling generated energy to the grid. After this phase, Tesla will begin to install solar panels in another 24,000 South Australian Housing Trust’s buildings. In the third stage, the company will assemble panels on the buildings of interested citizens, until 50,000 houses limit is exhausted.

Each application will be checked for the cost-effectiveness of the installation. Factors such as the building’s physical capacity to maintain a heavy photovoltaic installation, its geographical location, and the average sunshine of the building’s roof will be taken into account.

The whole project will cost $800 million and it is expected to significantly improve the stability of the electricity grid and reduce electricity costs by up to 30%. Project is planned to be completed by 2022
